4 Bangladeshi nationals arrested in Tripura

They were remanded in police custody for questioning Saturday.

Four Bangladeshi nationals were arrested from Matai village under the Hrishyamukh rural development block in South Tripura district recently. They were remanded in police custody for questioning Saturday.

Speaking to reporters, a police officer informed that cops from the Hrishyamukh police station and the 109 Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) conducted a joint operation based on a tip-off that a few Bangladeshi nationals had illegally crossed the international border and had taken shelter in a local household.

“We detained four people including two women and two men from the residence of one Ashish Majumder. A case was registered as per the law and the accused persons were produced in the court. They were remanded in police custody for questioning for three days,” the official said.

The owner of the house, where the illegal immigrants were nabbed, was also produced in the court and charged with human trafficking while the Bangladeshi nationals were charged under the Passports Act.

Sources in the police said the Bangladeshis were en route to Surat in Gujarat.

Earlier on October 1, a Bangladeshi national was arrested on his way to Delhi at Bishalgarh in Tripura’s Sepahijala district.

An official of the state police informed that Md Rafiq, 36, was detained by locals at Bishalgarh and later handed over to the cops.

Preliminary investigation revealed that he illegally entered Indian territory months ago with the help of one Md Anwar.

Tripura shares an 856km-long international border with Bangladesh, several patches which are still unfenced.
