The Mizo National Front, now in the Opposition in Mizoram, on Thursday called for the removal of N Biren Singh from the position of Manipur Chief Minister, saying that the "suffering inflicted on Zofate brethren" – referring to the Kuki-Zomi community – in the ongoing conflict “has reached intolerable levels”. The MNF's Zoramthanga was the chief minister of Mizoram when the conflict in Manipur began last year. He had expressed concern and support for the Kuki-Zomi community, and Mizoram had seen over 12,000 people from the community displaced by the conflict taking shelter there. The MNF is still part of the NDA. The Zoram People's Movement, elected to power in Mizoram last year, has also followed a policy of solidarity with the Kuki-Zomi community, which shares a deep ethnic bond with the Mizos. On Thursday, a statement from the MNF said: “Chief Minister Biren Singh’s inaction and misuse of power have only worsened the situation, making his continuation in office both untenable and shameful. His leadership has not only failed to resolve the crisis but has also perpetuated the suffering of innocent people. We demand that Chief Minister Biren Singh step down immediately. Furthermore, the Central government must take urgent, decisive action to end this crisis once and for all, ensuring that the people of Manipur reclaim their democratic rights and dignity.” The MNF said it would back the current Mizoram government in efforts to support the people affected by the violence. “We urge the Mizoram government to persist in its unwavering support for the displaced and to fulfil their promises with integrity and patriotism. Let their actions reflect the values of justice, compassion, and unity that define our people. We will wholeheartedly support any initiative by the Mizoram government that prioritises the welfare and well-being of Zofate across the region. Let this commitment serve as a beacon of hope, ensuring that our shared values of unity, compassion, and resilience continue to guide us through these challenging times," the statement read.
