SYDNEY, SEPTEMBER 29: A penalty and late goal both by their captain Ivan Zamorano gave Chile a 2-0 win over the United States to take the Olympic bronze medal in men8217;s football on Friday.
The Inter Milan striker hit his first from the spot in the 69th minute after Danny Califf brought down substitute Sebastian Gonzalez in the penalty area during an increasing number of Chilean raids.
Zamorano hit the second with deadly accuracy from inside the penalty area in the 84th minute off a clever through ball from Claudio Maldonado that culminated a flowing Chilean move.
While the Chileans tried to dominate through possession, it was the Americans playing their first ever Olympic football medal match who came closest in the early stages when Josh Wolff produced a good save from Chilean keeper Nelson Tapia.
But the Chileans8217; routine kicked in during the second half, and the eventual victory had long looked on the cards as both teams enjoyed highly colourful and partisan support at the Sydney football ground from another near sell-out crowd for Olympic football.
The competition8217;s final is due to be played at noon Saturday between Cameroon and Spain at the main olympic Stadium the Spanish going for a second Olympic title after 1992 in Barcelona, while Cameroon will hope to keep the title in Africa after Nigeria8217;s win at the Atlanta Games.
