India8217;s representative to International Civil Aviation Association ICAO, Dr Nassim Zaidi, is set to become the country8217;s new director general of civil aviation DGCA once the current incumbent Kanu Gohain8217;s extended tenure expires in September.

His nomination by the ministry of civil aviation is subject to clearance of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet ACC headed by the Prime Minister.

Zaidi, who has served as a joint secretary in the civil aviation ministry, is an Uttar Pradesh-cadre officer of 1976 batch. Zaidi has been the front-runner in the race to become the new director general, but his appointment had been uncertain since he fell short of the technical expertise. Further, his term at ICAO gets over in September, which means he cannot take on before this period.

But with current DGCA Kanu Gohain8217;s term set to get another three month extension once his tenure gets over in July, enough time has been bought to enable Zaidi to take over the post once the incumbent moves out in September. Sources also said that the rules of appointment for the director general of civil aviation post have also been relaxed to enable Zaidi to take charge.
