Vandals at cemetery

WARSAW: Vandals have damaged the graves of Jewish victims of Nazi persecution at a Woodland site near the Polish capital Warsaw, the Rzeczpospolita newspaper has reported. At Palmiry cemetery 25 km west of Warsaw, the assailants overturned 54 headstones decorated with the names of victims and Jewish symbols. Part of the grave of Polish parliamentary chairman Maciej Rataj, a prominent non-Jew also murdered by the Nazis, was also damaged. Polish authorities said the unguarded cemetery had been the scene of regular desecration.

Stowaway still alive

TOKYO: A man half-frozen but alive was found clinging to the landing gear of a Northwest Airlines jumbo jet that arrived in Tokyo from Shanghai. The man, who was conscious but unable to move, described himself as a 23-year-old Chinese citizen. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Ground attendants found the man clinging to the left rear landing gear after the Boeing 747 had pulled up to the terminal. The manhad been frozen so severely during the three-hour flight that police called to the scene had to pry him loose. The man had survived the flight in a non-pressurized part of the plane at altitudes of more than 10,000 meters. Police still want to question the man, who faces deportation. Japanese officials are battling an influx of illegal immigrants from China sneaking into the country in search of work.

New face of a row

WASHINGTON: The face on the new dollar coin will be that of liberty, but with features quot;inspired by Sacajawea, the famous Indian guide, the US Treasury department said. The choice won praise for widely differing reasons, but representative Michael Castle said on Wednesday he will fight it in favour of the Statue of Liberty quot;the greatest and most recognisable symbol of freedom worldwide. He has introduced a bill that would overturn Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin8217;s approval of a citizens advisory panels 6-1 recommendation last month in favour of the Liberty-Sacajawea theme. Sacajaweawas the young shoeshine woman who joined the expedition of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in 1804 and, with a baby in her arms, helped guide the explorers to the Pacific Ocean. The new coin will be about the same size as the Anthony dollar. But unlike the Anthony dollar, it will be coloured gold and have an edge distinct from the quarter, probably smooth like the nickel, said US Mint Director Philip Diehl.
