PRAGUE: Pre-election promises are often tough to fulfill, especially if your party loses, but Czech pensioners8217; party chairman Eduard Kremlicka delivered fast by eating a live beetle in front of reporters. 8220;The bug was crawling across the plate, so I bit its head off, and when the yellow jelly came out, I gobbled it up and washed it down with fernet liqueur,8221; CTK news agency quoted the white-moustachioed former communist army officer Kremlicka as saying yesterday after making good on his promise.

As he left the polling station on Friday, Kremlicka vowed on national television to eat a large bug if his party did not pass the five per cent threshold needed to win parliamentary seats in the June 19-20 general election. 8220;I chose the bigger one of two offered because it was meaty and a high-protein meal,8221; the 68-year old said.

Viagra casualty

TEL AVIV: An Israeli man in his seventies who took the impotence miracle drug Viagra died ofan heart attack after making love to his wife of 50 years, hospital officials have said. The man, who had ignored his wife 8216;s warning about Viagra, lost consciousness shortly after taking the pill and was rushed to Tel Hashomer hospital near here. The man, who had a history of heart problems, succumbed to a heart attack and died. Israel prohibited the sale of Viagra in May while awaiting additional information on its secondary effects following the death of six people after taking the pill in the United States. However, the ban was lifted in early June.

Singer arrested

BEVERLY HILLS: Singer Bobby Brown has been arrested for an investigation of misdemeanour and sexual battery. Brown, husband of actress-singer Whitney Houston, was at the Beverly Hills hotel when he was placed under citizen8217;s arrest at about 4:15 p.m. yesterday, Lt. Joe Lombardi said. Police took him into custody when they arrived and booked him at Beverly Hills jail, Lombardi said. Brown was released later on a 2,778 dollarbail. He was scheduled to appear in court on July 17. Brown, who lives in Mendham, New Jersey, is best known for his 1988 album Don8217;t Be Cruel.

Jumbo b8217;day

WASHINGTON: The national zoo in the US capital had a great celebration for Ambika, the elephant, gifted by Indian children to the zoo, on her 50th birthday recently. The zoo presented Ambika a birthday cake 8212; stacked with 20 individual cakes made from herbivore pellets, apple fibre biscuits, rice, hay and warm water.

Earlier a four-hour birthday party at the zoo, celebrating Ambika8217;s life, elephant education and its conservation and family fun was organised, the washington times said.

QUITO: An Indian national who allegedly made X-rated videotapes involving Ecuadoran children has been captured in a town south of here along with four accomplices, police said today. Kamal Kanti Bandyopadhay, a Peruvian and three Ecuadorans were arrested in Azogues, 300 km south of here, police colonel German Britosaid.

The group is charged with making pornographic movies with boys and girls between five and 12 years old.
