
Hong Kong beats China in piracy
BEIJING: Hong Kong has recently overtaken China as the undisputed global leader in the export of pirated products, claim observers. quot;Two years ago, China was the unquestioned global leader in the export of pirated products particularly CD-ROMs and software,quot; US trade representive Charlene Barshefesky said during a recent China visit. But recent reports quoting observers say the slot of notorious pirates has now been occupied by Hong Kong, whose leading newspaper South China Morning Post had a front paged report last month on the arrest of a top customs officer for alleged corruption in connection with the massive seizure of some eight million pirated CDs and production equipment worth millions.
Skinheads attack two Indians
MOSCOW: Two Indians, taking part in an anti-fascist torch procession on the victory day to commemorate the defeat of Nazis in World War-II, were assaulted in Czech capital Prague by a group of local skinheads, Russian news agencyItar-Tass has reported. One of the Indians had nose injuries, while the other suffered a fracture in one arm in the attack before police could rush to their rescue in downtown Prague, the agency said without identifying the victims.
Deaf-mute slave ring busted
NEW YORK: A Mexican couple convicted of forcing deaf-mutes from their country to sell trinkets in New York was sentenced Friday to eight years in prison each and ordered to pay a total of 500,000 dollars restitution. Jose Paoletti Lemus and his wife Rosa Maria, who are also deaf and mute, were found to have helped run a virtual slavery ring. The deaf-mute Mexicans had been recruited with the promise of work in the US, but once here they were beaten if they refused to work. Officials have identified 57 victims. Attorneys for the victims said the ring netted around one million dollars per year.
