For art8217;s sake
LONDON: Some of the biggest names in the art world have been fooled by a literary hoax perpetrated by a British author and the veteran British rocks star David Bowie, a report said today. The Independent newspaper reported how last week the glitterati of New York gathered for a launch party of William Boyd8217;s biography of the apparently rediscovered American artist Nat Tate, where they heard Bowie read extracts. And later today the British art world was also due to gather at a London restaurant for the British launch of the memoir, British papershave also run extracts from the book. But The Independent said the story of how Tate suffered from depression, burned most of his paintings and then jumped to his death from the Staten island ferry in New York aged 31, was fiction. Some of the paintings pictured in the book were by Boyd himself, said the paper, while photographs were from Boyd8217;s own collection. The book was released by 21 publishing, run, among others, by Bowie and British magazine editor Karen Wright, said The Independent. quot;Will Boyd and I were both aware it was a scam but we never meant it maliciously,quot; said Wright. quot;Part of it was, we were very amused that people kept saying yet, I8217;ve heard of him8217;. There is a willingness not to appear foolish, critics are too proud for that.quot;
