LUDHIANA, April 8: The World Cup trophy, on its tour to India, was unveiled here today in the presence of pop stars Anaida, Usha Uthup, Anamika, Jassi and MTV VJ Nikhil.

The performers are here for a World Cup concert to be held later in support of the United Nation’s AIDS awareness programme. The concert is a part of the “Pepsi World Cup on Tour” programme which has displayed the trophy around the nation.

The trophy, weighing 11 kg and featuring a golden globe aloft three silver columns, was unveiled at Hyderabad, Chennai, Vishakapatnam, Banglore, Kanpur, Delhi and Colombo (Srilanka), before it reached Ludhiana today. Referring to it as a unique initiative undertaken by Pepsi, K. S. Dhillon, chairman, Phillaur Cool Drinks, said, “Pepsi has always been able to connect cricket with the passion of young people. The arrival of the World Cup trophy has added momentum to India’s passion for winning the World Cup. The cup is on a mission to different parts of India to gather the goodwill of millions of Indians.”

Meanwhile, talking about Punjabi music, Usha Uthup said “I’ve been singing Punjabi tunes ever since the 1960s. The music may have come to the forefront recently, but it has always got a good response from the audience. The beat is fantastic and it appeals straight to the heart.”

Anaida associated the appeal of the music to the Punjabis’ passionate involvement with life.

What about the presence of semi-clad damsels in Punjabi music videos? “I’m ashamed of the fact. I was new to Bombay and I had no say in the making of the video,” claimed Jassi of “Dil Lai Gai Kudi Gujrat Di” fame.

Opposing the claim, Anaida said,“no one can make you do something you don’t want to do for your own music video.”

However, Nikhil justified it all by saying “you don’t have to watch the video if you don’t want to”.
