Germany reclaims new8217; Reichstag

BERLIN: With brass bands, flags and a ceremonial handing-over of a key, Germany8217;s parliament inaugurated its new home in the restored Reichstag on Monday, a defining moment in the government8217;s return to its prewar capital Berlin. A crowd of politicians including Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and his predecessor, the long-serving Helmut Kohl, stood on the steps of the stately Reichstag for the opening ceremony. Lawmakers later were to hold their inaugural session in the Reichstag, which more than any other building in Germany has represented the phases of Germany8217;s terrible, turbulent history over the passing century. The building was burned during the Nazi era, bombed by allies and seized by Red Army soldiers who planted the Soviet flag on the roof in a moment that symbolised Hitler8217;s defeat.
