PUNE, Oct 14: Agitated women residents of Mahatma Phulenagar in sector number 18 of Pradhikaran in Nigdi today took out a massive morcha at the office of the Pimpri-Chinchwad New Township Development Authority (PCNTDA) to protest against defective construction of the buildings and erratic water supply.

The women were prevented from entering the office building but a delegation later submitted a memorandum to PCNTDA’s chief executive officer Prakash Joshi. The delegation held discussions with executive engineer S K Jadhav regarding their complaints.

There are 128 buildings in the Mahatma Phulenagar constructed by a private construction company. The residents complained that the construction quality was poor and that water seeped through the slabs. The buildings were constructed in 1992.

They feared that some slabs were likely to collapse because of the poor quality of construction. They said that there was an acute scarcity of water which was provided between 1 and 5 am. As the pressure was very low, water could not be provided to residents on the higher floors. The residents have demanded that ground storage tanks should be constructed.

Executive engineer Jadhav said that a joint meeting of the construction company, the PCNTDA officials and the residents would be held on October 18 to discuss the demands of the residents.
