Although it8217;s difficult to predict when the Pune Municipal Corporation will cover the whole city under its 8216;Unwired Pune8217; project, it8217;s ready with a WiFi plan.

The plan is to install WiFi hotspots at Citizen Facilitation Centre CFC kiosks being set up at 144 places. People can buy coupons and enjoy WiFi connectivity in the vicinity of the hotspots.

The IT department of the PMC, the kiosk operator and Internet service providers are holding talks in this direction.

The PMC is in the process of setting up CFCs in each of its 144 wards and so far about 70 have been set up. If the new plan is implemented, the kiosks will enable citizens to use the WiFi network in addition to existing services like payment of property tax, telephone bills and electricity bills. 8220;Since CFCs are spread across the city, we are aiming at turning them into WiFi hotspots. If this happens, people can easily access WiFi,8221; said Anupam Saraph, chief information officer of the PMC.

Rohan Dudhedia, an official of Vansh Infotech, which has been given the task of running the kiosks, said, 8220;We held a couple of meetings to discuss the nitty-gritty of the plan and it is up to the Internet service providers to see whether it is feasible for them or not. If they think it is, we can start the project.8221; At present, two private firms are providing Internet connectivity to the CFC kiosks.

Saraph added that if the idea clicks, then it would strengthen the WiFi network in the city. 8220;We can keep coupons for sale. Citizens can buy them and use the WiFi network.8221;
