PATNA, OCTOBER 29: When District Magistrate Amit Khare and a special force of 100 constables and five magistrates today raided the Beur Adarsh jail, they were in for a surprise. Among what they seized were: Five CD players, 60 colour TVs, 11 tape-recorders, a generator set, six transistors, air-coolers, dish antennae, Walkmans and several mobile phones. They discovered five cable connections as well. Also, there were 12 Rampuri knives and a considerable collection of ganja.

Khare told The Indian Express that 10 days ago he had received information that a cinema hall manager in Fatuha had received a threatening call. During investigation, it was found that the call was made from a mobile phone in Beur jail. It was then that the raid was planned.

Most of the items were retrieved from the possession of former minister Illiyas Hussain and his supporters. Hussain has been imprisoned in the bitumen scam case. A fortnight ago, his supporters had clashed with other prisoners over the visit of some teenagers to the minister’s cell. Inmates had alleged that the boys were brought in for homosexual acts in prison.

The administration has not yet found how the luxury gadgets and weapons were sneaked into the jail and how many jail officials were involved. Jail Superintendent Balmohan Nayak’s relative Chintu Nayak is also a prisoner in Beur jail. Khare said: “We are still investigating the entire thing and hope to get a breakthrough soon”.
