At a time when terror attacks have hit the city, lovers of art have been looking at works that reflect angst and troubled times. An artist that comes to mind is Francisco Goya, the Spanish chronicler of history and forerunner to Modernism. One says this because Goya has evoked the misery of the Spanish war with France in a manner which is timeless and so haunting that it may be applied to any situation irrespective of cultural moorings.

Let us first briefly trace the important milestones of this great master. Goya was born in 1746, in Aragon. He began his career as an artist, while apprenticing Jose Lujan at the age of 14. Later he moved to Madrid, where he became connected to the Royal Court painter Anton Raphael Mengs. Interestingly this painter was rejected by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts when he submitted his work in 1763.

This did not deter his spirits and he went on to paint in Rome where he was recognised for his genius with a prize in the Parma art competition. After marrying Josefa the sister of Bayeu his fellow painter Goya settled down to a life of domesticity, taking up commissioned works for royalty. He did tapestries that still adorn the walls of Palacio Real de El Padro.

This life was to change though when the painter was struck with fever and deafness. He retreated into a shell and this is when he produced work he is best known for. The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters a much referenced etching was a product of this dark period. The thread of macabre that ran through Goya8217;s later works like Saturn Devouring One of his Children, Courtyard with Lunatics. His masterpiece The Third of May 1808 that depicts the killings of Spanish peasants by the French infantry, Napoleon8217;s army, is one his most moving and chilling works of art. It is the groundbreaking work that has become the archetypal representative of the terror of war.
