CHANDIGARH, Nov 24: Animation films, we have seen in plenty…the Cartoon Network is full of them. But this one is indeed different. Here the characters are not drawn and activated through computer graphics, but are made out of paper cutting. And if its creator, Prabal Parmanik, and the Calcutta Doordarshan are to be believed, this is the first such animation film ever made.

The film, which is yet to reach the final editing table, was screened to a select gathering at the Alliance Francaise this evening. Parmanik has brought in two aspects of our rich culture and religious history: the sober and reflective Buddha and the intense love saga of Radha and Krishna. “The art of paper-cutting has been traditionally used for Vaishnav temples. Hence you see the domination of the Govinda theme manifested in Radha-Krishna dance here,” Parmanik said.

He told the audience that the film should not be treated with the usual sympathy reserved for works by amateurs but should be critically analysed. So, Parmanik, the editing has to be smooth without the jerks that now mar the charming figures and the depiction has to be made more crisp.

With befitting folk music as its background score, this film will be one of its kind when it is completed.
