West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Friday quelled all speculation by declaring that he would not stay back after expiry of his term. Governor Gandhi is not keen on staying back after his term expires on December 13 this year, his press secretary Dhurba Basu announced at the Writers Building here.
The Governor knows his term and he will go by that. All gossips of his staying back are preposterous, Basu said.
A recent article by CPI M central committee member Dipen Ghosh in party mouthpiece Ganashakti had alleged that the Governors visit to cyclone-affected areas at Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district on June 2 was part of a game plan to keep him at Raj Bhavan.
While the elected head of the state Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was harassed when he went to visit the cyclone-affected areas in North 24 Parganas district, the Governor was received by swank saree-clad women with garlands in hand. It is a mystery where these sarees and fresh flowers came from in the relief camps, Ghosh wrote in Ganashakti.
Its been heard that Mamata Banerjee has requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to keep Gandhi back at Raj Bhavan. This is,of course,in recognition of his role during Trinamool Congresss agitation at Singur and Nandigram, Ghosh had written.
According to sources at the Writers Building, the Governor was upset not only over the article but also over criticism by Minister for Self-Help Groups Rekha Goswamy. Goswamy in an interview to The Indian Express on June 11 had criticised the Governor for maintaining silence while CPIM supporters were subjected to violence at Khejuri.
