Encouraged by the relative calm in the Valley,Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday attended a public function in the city, first time since the outbreak of the current crisis in the state.
Omar inaugurated a receiving station of the states Power Development Department and there were no protests. The function was attended by a small gathering of the activists of National Conference who shouted pro-National Conference slogans. Incidentally, the function has been held days before the state government is due to shift its Darbar to Jammu for winter.
The Chief Minister, however, did not speak at the function, nor talked to the media but left after a very brief stay.
Omar has scrupulously avoided Srinagar city for the past four months lest it provoked street anger against him.
However, with the steady improvement in the situation after Eid,Omar has found it easy to move around.
The other reason for Omar attending his first public function in the city in this summer is the drastic decline in the number of killings in the Valley after Eid. Only six persons have lost their lives or later succumbed to their injuries in the past one month.
