The Sangh Parivars plans of organising a protest against the detention of Varun Gandhi, the new poster boy of Hindutva, under the NSA,proved to be a damp squib in Uttar Pradesh on Monday. While the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha BJYM had given the call for observing a black day, their protest was confined to cadres wearing black badges.

The VHP,which is angry with the BJP for fielding Lalji Tandon from Lucknow, kept away, while the Bajrang Dal was busy organising its Rashtra Raksha Yagya. Disappointed, the BJYM accused the state Government of foiling their attempts to take out a demonstration.

Said the VHPs Awadh in-charge Ved Trivedi: We boycotted the protest since we are opposing Tandon. He got several temples demolished to appease Muslims of his constituency Lucknow West8230; We are not bonded labourers of the BJP and we cannot accept their double-speak of supporting Tandon and protesting against the arrest of Varun.

Shailendra Tripathi, the convenor of the Bajrang Dals Kanpur region,on the other hand, blamed code of conduct for keeping away. But we are with Varun Gandhi, he said.

Explaining that they were busy with the Rashtra Raksha Yagyas being held across the state,Ashok Senger, the Bajrang Dals Avadh convenor, clarified: During the yagyas we are making detailed mention about the victimisation of Varun by the BSP Government for its vote bank politics.
