The US Federal Register maintains a strict record of every gift that comes to its federal officers from foreign governments. So what did President Bush and Laura Bush get while in the White House? A look at the gift tally from 2004 till 2007 (when the latest round of gift tabulation was held),published by the US government last month,shows that the Indian subcontinent opened its treasure trove to shower the First Couple with gifts of silks,precious stones,jewellery and artwork. Gift tally,2004
• Manmohan Singh gifted Bush a $550 round marble tabletop inlaid with coral,malachite,lapis lazuli,mother of pearl,turquoise and agate flowers held on a wooden base when he visited him in September 2004.
•Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf gave gifts worth $2,300 to Bush,including a dark table ornately inlaid with bone,an antique muzzle loader held in a wooden shadow box,a traditional Pakistani coat with a stain ornate design and a cream Pakistani hat. Musharraf gifted a $300 silver ornate bowl to the First Lady while Mrs Sehba Musharraf brought Mrs Bush $500 worth of jewellery.
•King Abdullah II of Jordan gifted Bush weapons worth $22,000 including a Maynard revolver and a Sharps 4 barrel pocket pistol.
Gift tally,2005
•Manmohan Singh gifted Bush a sterling Ravissant hinged box engraved with Mughal designsa replica of the Diwan-e-Aam in the Red Fort at Delhi.
• Natwar Singh,then External Affairs Minister,gifted Bush a $750 Ravissant urn stamped with intricate floral design when he met Bush in April,2005.
• Musharraf gifted Bush a $336 hardcover book titled,Sadequain: The Holy Sinner.
• Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai gifted Bush a $8,000 beige rug with maroon,black and brown diamond print. His wife Zeenat Karzai gifted the First Lady a traditional Afghan dress embroidered with ornate gold patterns and intricate seed beadwork,a silk shawl and a green-and-gold polyester shawl with ornate sleeves worth $375. President Karzai also gave gifts worth $1,100,including a lapis lazuli candelabra and a knotted silk pile rug to the First Lady.
•The Sultan of Brunei brought with him gifts worth over $2,400,including silver picture frames and trays,Faberge crystal etched candleholders,a leather dog bed,a brown alligator leather thermos and a brown leather covered trunk among other things.
•Valdimir Putin gifted Bush collectables worth near $900,including photographs of former US Presidents,a silver horse shoe inlaid with aquamarine stones and several silver tone coins and artwork.
2006
•Manmohan Singh gifted Bush a $1,200 handcrafted,silver enamelled bald eagle perched on a rock.
•A P J Abdul Kalam brought Bush a $30 silk rug while Andhra CM Y.S. Rajashekhar Reddy and Andhra Pradesh Governor Rameshwar Thakur showered Bush with gifts worth $13,350,including a silver filigree chariot and two horses mounted on a velvet base and with intricate sandalwood artwork.
•Indias Rajya Sabha MP Nirmala Deshpande gifted Bush a spinning wheel,a bust of Mahatma Gandhi and books on the Mahatma worth $600.
•Musharraf gifted Bush a $2,000 woolen rug. On another occasion,he also gifted Bush a $425 four-panelled hinged screen. Mrs Sehba Musharraf gifted the First Lady sapphire jewellery,silk lengths and cashmere pashmina worth $680.
•Pakistan PM Shaukat Aziz gifted a horse saddle and a horse blanket worth $1,000. Mrs. Rukhsana Aziz gifted the First Lady desk accessories,assorted silk lengths and a book worth $700.
•Hamid Karzai gave gifts worth $9,000,including lapis lazuli mosaic bowls and urns. On another occasion,he gifted Bush a woven Afghan rug worth $4,800.
• Japans PM Junichiro Koizumi gifted Bush an electric-powered bicycle,posters and CDs worth $1,400. Koizumi brought desk accessories and jewellery worth nearly $500 for the First Lady.
• Chinese President Hu Jintao brought gifts worth $400,a porcelain-carved charger and a rosewood charger-holder.
• Italian President Silvio Berlusconi gifted a $454 framed photograph of Laura Bush,Barbara Bush and himself to the President.
•French President Jacques Chirac gifted Bush a $640 porcelain espresso set and a sterling silver tray.
2007
•Indian NSA M.K. Narayanan brought a $325 inlaid multi-coloured octagon box for Condoleeza Rice.
•Saudi Arabias King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud gifted the First Lady jewellery worth $85,000 and a desert artwork worth $10,000.
•Tony Blair brought Bush a $450 porcelain wedgewood bowl with black floral border and the words: Am I not a Man and a Brother?. Cherie Blair brought for the First Lady a $1,206 Tanner Krolle leather handbag.
•Karzai came with a blue Lapis Lazuli bowl worth $3,860 and a black-and-gold traditional Afghan vest with white ties,and a traditional Afghan pants suit worth $135.
•Jordan king Abdullah II bin Al Hussein and queen Rania Al Abdullah gifted Bush a silver mosaic box,a book on the mosaics of Jordan,vases etc.
• French president Nicholas Sarkozy brought gifts worth $11,350.
