Turban row: India calls Italian envoy

Following an incident at the Rome Airport when members of a Sikh delegation was asked to remove their turbans during security checking.

India on Thursday summoned Italian Ambassador Daniele Mancini and stressed upon the need to be sensitive towards the concerns of Sikhs with regard to turbans,following an incident at the Rome Airport when members of a Sikh delegation was asked to remove their turbans during security checking.

Mancini was called by MEA Secretary (West) Sudhir Vyas and the sensitivity of the situation was impressed upon him,official sources said here.

The Ambassador indicated that there is a large Sikh population in Italy and the authorities are sensitive to the concerns of the Sikh community. He also mentioned about the strict guidelines that have been issued for officials to follow in such matters, a source said.
