T-shirts about Anni Dewani spark outrage

Her husband Shrien Dewani, based in Britain,is facing the possibility of extradition after being implicated in the murder.

The sale of T-shirts carrying objectionable material referring to the gruesome murder of an Indian-origin woman have sparked a fresh controversy here, drawing criticism from different sections of society, including that from the victims family.

The T-shirts,with the message Dewani Tours treat your wife to a killer holiday, refers to the killing of Indian-origin bride Anni Dewani in Gugulethu township of Cape Town in 2010,during her honeymoon. Her husband Shrien Dewani, based in Britain,is facing the possibility of extradition after being implicated in the murder.

The message uses a popular English font type resembling Hindi script. This is disrespectful and shows no remorse over a killing that shocked not just South Africa but the world, said Gugulethu resident Vusi Ndoda.

He said he would talk to the man behind the idea,Indian-origin businessman Dinesh Dowlath,to withdraw the clothing line, failing which he would campaign for boycotting stores.

Dowlath,on the other hand, rejected suggestions that he was making light of the horrific murder. He said that T-shirts,with controversial and ambiguous statements, were a speciality at his stores. He told the weekly Sunday Times Extra,These T-shirts are for a discerning intelligent market. He added that although he creates most of the slogans, this one was suggested by a customer.

Meanwhile, called on Dowlath to let decency prevail. As a family,we havent even started our grieving because the case is on hold and yet, there are those horrible people out there who see profit in this, Annis uncle Ashok Dewani told the weekly from his Sweden home.
