Saying there was a trust deficit among people of Naxal-hit areas,Union Home Minister P Chidambaram today called on industries to join hands in developing such areas rather than being content with profit and loss accounts.

Speaking at the annual meet of the Confederation of Indian Industries,Chidambaram said certain people in Naxal-affected areas rely more on structures of powers which oppose the country and have less faith in the good intentions of the government or business houses.

People have virtually distanced the government. There is a huge trust deficit between elected government and people of these areas. They tend to rely upon structures of power which oppose the country.

It is a wake-up call for us. We must ask why there is a trust deficit among the people of India, government of India, government of states. Why is there so much distrust of people who want to bring development and industry? he said.

Are we only content with our profit and loss accounts, our balance sheets, share of parties, daily dose of entertainment in the T20 matches.

On the issue of some voluntary groups supporting Naxals,he said civil society was divided on the issue. One camp,he said, holds the view that the government is bad and to be fought against at every turn and every stage. As a result if there is that an armed liberation struggle takes place,so be it8230; I dont want to take names but many of them are highly educated, hold very important places in universities and other institutions. They write very well. I hope I could write like them, he said. The other camp,to put it charitably,is quiet,to put it uncharitably, unconcerned, he said.
