To enhance the role of vocational training providers in producing skilled hands, the Ministry of Labour and Employment has favoured introducing career guidance by these institutes for the benefit of candidates.
The Ministry has also suggested that these institutes should stay connected with the students after pass-out to examine their level of performance and seek their feedback.
The suggestion comes against the backdrop of increased demand from the industry, facing acute shortage of skilled workforce, for qualified skilled hands.
8220;Vocational training providers should have satisfactory schemes advising potential trainees about courses and careers,8221; said M K Pariyar, deputy director of the Directorate General of Employment and Training under the Ministry.
Interacting with the training providers at a function here today,he said the training centres should focus on the level of teaching and could also take the assistance of suitable audio-video medium for this.
As on March,2010,there were about 5,724 registered vocational training providers across the country, with as many as 7.13 lakh candidates being trained till this period.
Pariyar said feedback from the students should be must for the training providers as it will be a vital component when accreditation is sought.
The Ministry has recently signed an MoU with Quality Council of India for accrediting skill assessment bodies which will assess the candidates trained by vocational training providers.
Pariyar said training providers could also exercise flexibility in updating the course curriculum in keeping with the requirement of the industry.
Director of Quality Council of India QCI Vipin Sahni said only five per cent of the Indian labour force in the age group of 20-24 has obtained vocational skills through formal means whereas this percentage in industrialised countries varies between 60 and 96 per cent.
QCI also proposed to give accreditation to ITIs.
