The prestigious LD Institute of Indology here has come under a cloud with the police registering a criminal case against its director Jitendra B Shah, trustee Shrenik Kasturbhai Sheth and five others, including officials of Banaras Hindu University and Delhi Institute of Indology, after allegations that Shah was appointed in 1998 on the basis of forged certificates.

The case was registered on Tuesday following a court direction on a complaint filed by RTI activist Vinod Pandya, who has accused Shah of having submitted false documents to prove he had requisite qualifications for the job and the institute allowing him to continue in the job even after coming to know of the truth.
After the appointment of Shah in 1998,a complaint was lodged with the state education department, alleging that it was inappropriate and in violation of the rules and regulations. Sources in the education department said that inquiries over the next four years found that Shah had submitted a forged experience certificate of teaching post-graduate classes at the BHU in 1986-87. Inquiries further found that the experience certificate submitted by Shah was forged by M R Mehta,a professor in the department of philosophy at BHU. In May 2006,inquiries revealed that Mehta had issued another experience certificate with signature of S L Jain,Dean of the Faculty of Arts,BHU.
V M Celar, inspector of Gujarat University Police Station, said: We have registered the case and a sub-inspector is probing the matter.
