The murder of a senior anaesthetist following the death of a patient in Tuticorin district has triggered a protest by medical professionals across the state. Medical services in the state were affected on Wednesday due to the stir by government and private doctors.
The agitated doctors demanded stern punishment for the accused to prevent recurrence of such an assault. The medical professionals were protesting the murder of Dr T Sethulakshmi,a 55-year-old anaesthetist and medical officer at the Employees State Insurance Corporation Hospital in Tuticorin,on Monday night. Dr Sethulakshmi was hacked to death by the husband of a pregnant woman who died due to complications.
Police officials from the coastal district said R Mahesh,27,an autodriver by profession,and three of his friends who helped him were arrested soon after.
Mahesh,who thought his wifes death was due to negligence,attacked Dr Sethulakshmi at her clinic. She died on the spot.
Mullaperiyar: Kerala ready for joint control
REITERATING Keralas demand for a new dam at Mullaperiyar,Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Wednesday said the state was ready for joint control of the proposed dam.
During the post-Cabinet briefing,Chandy said the proposed new dam could be jointly controlled by Kerala,Tamil Nadu and the Centre. At present,the existing dam is fully controlled by Tamil Nadu,although the structure exists in Kerala.
The CM said,The demand for new dam has gained acceptance at the national level. The proposal has come under consideration of the empowered committee,formed by the SC. No party or individual in Kerala has objected to the idea of giving the existing quantity of water to Tamil Nadu from the proposed dam.
The Empowered Committee had asked the stakeholders whether an independent committee could be constituted to manage/regulate/operate the new dam.
