Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may have kept silent when the Congress decided to give tickets to Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar, but he was aware of the simmering resentment in the Sikh community. Before the shoe-throwing incident at Home Minister P Chidambaram’s press conference, which finally led to the denial of tickets to Tytler and Kumar, the PM was scheduled to address a press conference in New Delhi. He,however, cancelled it after the controversy over the CBI’s clean chit to Tytler in the 1984 riots case. According to insiders, the PM was concerned about the repercussions of tickets being given to these leaders — a move that he would have to defend. After the denial of tickets to the duo,the PM,in an interaction with women journalists, said: “der aaye durust aaye” (better late than never).
