Suspected militants killed one CRPF officer and injured a personnel at Nowgam on the outskirts of the city Wednesday. A massive manhunt has been launched to track down the attackers.

Police said militants travelling in a car targeted a CRPF patrol at Poru Chowk on the national highway in the afternoon. Our patrol led by an officer,assistant sub inspector Udit Narayan,was attacked by militants. One personnel also sustained injuries, CRPF spokesperson,Kishore Prasad said.

He added that Narayan succumbed to his injuries later. The injured personnel has been shifted to Armys Base hospital for treatment, he said.

No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

This is the second attack on security forces in the past nine days in the area. On December 2,a police officer was killed and three injured when suspected militants targeted a police party in a market in Chadoora,15 km away from the site of Wednesdays attack.

The stretch has become particularly vulnerable in the past one year,and police believe a militant module operating in Pulwama district is targeting security forces on the highway and its vicinity.
