As Protests over the Shopian double rape and murder continue, the Jammu and Kashmir Government on Thursday suspended two doctors, who had conducted the postmortem of the victims, for professional incompetence and negligence. The Government has already suspended five officials, including the former police chief of Shopian district.
The decision to suspend Dr Nighat Shaheen and Dr Bilal Ahmed was taken after the judicial commission set up to probe the case indicted the police, civil administration,Forensic Science Laboratory and the medical team for serious lapses in investigations and postmortem procedure. The Health Department order said the duo has been suspended till the inquiry into alleged negligence in the conducting of autopsies is over.
The judicial commission headed by High Court Judge Muzaffar Jan retd,in its interim report submitted to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah last Sunday, had called the medical team highly unprofessional and incompetent. The commission raised a major question when it asked why the doctors did not open the skulls as well as check the hearts during the post mortem, leading to the loss of vital evidence.
However, the PDP has expressed surprise at Dr Nighats suspension. The suspended doctor was part of the team brought from Pulwama to conduct a second post mortem after the local team failed to do justice to their job under pressure from the Government. The suspension order is a clear case of victimisation of an officer who has stood by the truth and her conscience and has exposed the official conspiracy to hush up the case, a PDP spokesman said. She Nighat was the only doctor who, after the second post mortem, had declared that it was not a case of drowning or accident but of rape and murder, the statement said and added, now it seems the doctor is being punished for speaking the truth and failing to bow to government pressure.
