Durga Soren, son of JMM chief Shibu Soren, died in Bokaro on Thursday early morning. He was 39.
According to reports, around 3 am,he fell down in the bathroom and was then rushed to a Bokaro hospital, where he was declared brought dead. He will be cremated at the familys native village,Nemra,in Ramgarh district on Friday.
The post-mortem report is not yet available. Sources said some years back, one of his kidneys was damaged and had to be removed.
Durga,a former JMM MLA,is survived by his wife and three daughters. He had contested and lost the Godda Lok Sabha seat.
Durga became an MLA in 2000 after he won the Jama Assembly seat. On counting day on Saturday,as the party, including his father, blamed him for going against the JMM by contesting from Godda,he told The Indian Express,No one knows what will happen tomorrow. I did what I thought was best for the party.
The JMM and its ally Congress had blamed Durga for breaking the agreement that they would not field candidates against each others sitting MPs. Durga, however, contested against Congresss sitting MP Furkan Ansari in Godda. Ansari lost to BJPs Nishikant Dubey by only 6,000 votes. While Dubey bagged 189,526 votes,Ansari got 183,119 votes,Durga managed to get only 79,153 votes. Had Durga not contested,Ansari could have got more votes.
In Hazaribagh,Congress candidate Saurabh Narayan Singh was defeated by BJPs Yashwant Sinha by 40,164 votes. JMMs Shiv Lal Mahato, who was given a ticket at the behest of Durga, polled 53,902 votes. Had Mahato not been in the fray, the result could have been in favour of Singh.
As JMMs general secretary,Durga was popular among a section of the young partymen who wanted Shibu Soren to dump the Congress and ally with the BJP. Durga himself was close to BJP leaders like Sinha and former CM Arjun Munda.
