Sharad likely to get JD(U) chief post for third term

The meeting will be held at the Constitution Club here.

Sharad Yadav is set to be re-elected the president of the Janata Dal (United) for a third successive term at a two-day meeting of the national council of the party, scheduled for April 13 and 14,sources disclosed here on Tuesday. The meeting will be held at the Constitution Club here.

The party constitution allows an incumbent president only two consecutive terms. According the JD(U) constitution,No office-bearer shall be eligible to hold the same office for a third consecutive term. This implies that the party will amend its constitution to facilitate Yadavs third shot at the presidency. Elected in place of George Fernandes first in 2009,Yadav was given a second two-year term in 2011.

Though the JD(U) has no other leader who can match Yadav in terms of stature and experience, except of course,Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, there was a bit of speculation over his continuation in view of this clause in the constitution. Nitish, many thought, could prop up someone else as a replacement for Yadav to boost his aggregate of different caste-groups in Bihar in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls.

The party presidency, coupled with the additional post of the NDA convener, provides Yadav with a key role in the Capital. He is perfectly suited for back-room parleys as the JD(U) walks a tight rope trying to keep the NDA afloat and guarding its own secular image.

Yadavs election is expected to be unanimous. The last date for filing nomination papers is April 9. The last date for withdrawals is April 13.
