The Shiv Sena on Wednesday attacked the Congress and the BSP,alleging that Varun Gandhi’s arrest and detention under the stringent National Security Act was aimed at appeasing the minority votebank. “It is a world record to be arrested under the NSA for making a speech. According to this law,all leaders and religious (fundamentalist) politicians in the country must be arrested,” said an editorial in Saamna, the Sena mouthpiece. “This is the message given out to all Hindus in the country,” it said, adding that it was understandable if Varun was charged and arrested for his alleged anti-minority statements, but questioned how right it was to invoke the NSA and dump him in jail. The editorial said if Varun’s talk of countering the injustice on Hindus was a threat to the nation and national security then it was necessary to arrest 80 crore Hindus under the NSA and turn the nation into a jail. The editorial said the Congress and Mayawati had repealed POTA to help release Muslims, and the same parties were calling Varun a threat to national security.
