SC sets aside Basus jail term

The Supreme Court set aside a three-day sentence imposed on CPM leader Biman Basu by Calcutta HC for allegedly making contemptuous remarks against a judge

The Supreme Court on Wednesday set aside a three-day sentence imposed on CPM leader Biman Basu by Calcutta HC for allegedly making contemptuous remarks against a judge in 2003 .

The SC upheld Basus appeal challenging the HCs March 31,2005 order ,holding him guilty of contempt for his remarks against Justice Amitav Lala for imposing restrictions on political demonstrations and rallies. HC had given him to three days in jail and imposed Rs 10,000 fine.
