The Supreme Court wants the Nanavati Commission and the Gujarat government to respond to a petition seeking Chief Minister Narendra Modis appearance before the investigation panel in connection with the post-Godhra riots of 2002.
A Bench of Justices D K Jain and A K Dave asked the Commission and the state government to respond on a petition by Jan Sangarsh Manch JSM,an NGO,for a direction to the Commission to summon Modi for questioning him.
The NGO stressed that role of the chief minister falls within the ambit of inquiry of the panel,of which terms of reference were expanded to include in its purview an examination of the chief ministers role in the riots.
In September 2009,the commission had rejected JSMs plea to summon of Modi and five others for cross-examination with regard to the communal violence in which over 1,000 people were killed.
The Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team SIT had in 2010 questioned Modi in connection with the riots.
