Denying charges that one of those killed in the firing,Moreshwar Sathe, was shot at by the police while he was in detention,SP Sandip Karnik said they had arrested him,but he managed to escape and was shot at some time later. Relatives of Sathe,a driver, had alleged that he was dragged out of the crowd and shot at point blank.
There have been allegations that one of the deceased was killed by police in an encounter while he was in police custody. We believe that because of such reports, peoples faith in the police is at stake, Karnik said.
Showing footage of Sathe being dragged by policemen,Karnik said: We want to clarify that Sathe was not taken into custody. We just attempted to detain him as he was in the group that assaulted police officers as talks between us and agitators were on. He later managed to escape and rejoined the agitators. He died in the subsequent firing. The crowd was continuously throwing stones,we also have footage of him in the group setting police cars on fire. We do not deny that he was shot at,but want to clarify that he was not in our custody when he died.
Asked about the policemen who were seen in the clippings firing at the agitators running from the police,Karnik said,I cannot give justification for everything that has happened. There were many officers controlling the mob at that time. Their decisions were taken at the individual level as per the situation on the ground.
Meanwhile, the Opposition stalled the Maharashtra Assembly for the third day straight Thursday over the death of farmers in the firing.
