Attorney General of India G E Vahanvati on Wednesday assured the Supreme Court that post-26/11,safeguards are in place to protect Mumbai from another terror attack.
A Bench led by Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan was told that the government had outlined a multi-pronged strategy to combat and counter terror attacks like 26/11 in Mumbai and Naxalism.
The steps taken, the AG said, included the setting up of 20 anti-terrorism schools across the country and special policing scheme for sensitive mega cities like Delhi,Mumbai,Kolkata,Chennai,Bangalore,Hyderabad and Ahmedabad, which have been prone to terror.
This formed the crux of a response by the government to a petition filed by senior advocate Soli J Sorabjee seeking judicial directions to the government to beef up their attempts to prevent and counter terror attacks.
The Centre has filed a counter affidavit stating the various steps taken by it to protect the rights of the people living in Mumbai. The Attorney General has also made a statement to the effect that all necessary measures are being taken in this regard, a Bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice B S Chauhan said.
After going through the response,Sorabjee preferred not to press his petition and through his counsel Sourab Kirpal, expressed satisfaction over the various measures undertaken by the government.
The petitioner submits that he is satisfied with the same and in view of this,he does not want to press the writ petition. In view of the statements made by the Centre and the Attorney General, the writ petition is disposed of, the Bench said.
Sorabjee had alleged that 26/11 attacks had exposed the mismatch between the might of terrorist outfits and the state machinery to counter them.
