After an attack by five stray dogs, a 35-year-old man on Thursday died fighting for his life in a Surat city hospital. While attempting to escape the attack, the man’s – Ibrahim Ansari – neck had hit a parked bike’s silencer, leaving him 80 per cent paralysed.
Ansari breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Surat city’s Lokhat hospital.
The Market department of the Surat Municipal Corporation caught five stray dogs from the area on Friday.
Ansari was a resident of the Bhandariwad area at Hodi-bungalow.
The incident occurred on October 24, when Ansari was walking back home after praying at his father’s grave in Haripura Kabristan.
Ibrahim’s elder brother, Aftab Ansari, who runs a printing press at Saiyedpura, said, “When Ibrahim was on his way home and passing through a narrow lane near his house, five stray dogs chased him. He ran to save himself, but lost balance and fell on the road, and his neck hit the silencer of a parked bike. The neighbours came out of the house and intimidated us. His entire body, starting from his chest, hands, abdomen and lower part of the body, got paralysed. He was undergoing treatment in Lokhat hospital at Rampura area and breathed his last on Thursday.”
He further added, “The stray dog menace has increased in our area, and we have complained to the SMC many times, but no action has been taken. If the SMC had impounded the stray dogs promptly, my younger brother would be alive today. He was working with me in the printing press and was unmarried.”

We have impounded five stray dogs. On examination, we found the dogs were sterilised and vaccinated. It is the behaviour of the stray dogs to bark and run after the public.
