The rupee gained 58 paise to 45.58 a dollar in early trade on Monday on the back of fresh capital inflows by foreign funds into equities.
The dollar weakening against other major Asian currencies also supported the rupee, dealers said.
The domestic currency had closed 14 paise higher at 46.16/17 in the previous session.
Dealers said the rupee strengthened against the US currency largely because of fresh capital inflows by foreign funds into equities.
Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex surged 233.60 points,or 1.33 per cent,to 17,804.42 points in the opening trade.
