A fortnight after his public criticism of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on the Maoist issue,AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh on Thursday expressed regret for creating a controversy which put his party in an embarrassing situation in Parliament.

The honourable Home Minister is a friend of mine and still remains one. Unfortunately, the government and the party had to face embarrassment over the issue. I regret that, said Singh, who was here to participate in the ongoing Congress yatra.

In his April 14 newspaper article, published soon after the Dantewada attack in which 76 security personnel were killed,Digvijay had described Chidambaram as extremely rigid, and said he had been a victim of the Home Ministers intellectual arrogance many times.

I think there is a lot of criticism from people who have not read my write-up properly8230; and the issues I was trying to raise. I was actually trying to point out the failure of the Chhattisgarh police and intelligence, said Singh on Thursday.

Singh was out of the country at the time the article was published. On his return last week,he said he would clarify his position to party president Sonia Gandhi. Party sources said he is still waiting to get an appointment with her.
