The Amravati police on Tuesday questioned Congress MLA and son of President Pratibha Patil,Rajendra Shekhawat,in connection with the Rs 1 crore seized from a vehicle coming from Congress MLA and Minister Rajendra Mulaks house in Nagpur.

According to Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar,Shekhawat accepted the fact that the money belonged to Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee MPCC and was meant for election expenses of Congress candidates in Amravatis recent municipal corporation polls.

The car carrying the cash was intercepted during the election campaign in Amravati on February 11 and Rs 1 crore in cash was seized.

Shekhawat and Mulak had later said the money belonged to MPCC and was meant to be spent for the campaign.

Amitesh Kumar said two others,state Congress general secretary Genesh Patil and Amravati Congress chief Vasantrao Saurkar,were also interrogated. The police had sought a local courts permission to question the people concerned in the matter. The court had granted the go-ahead.

Mulak had sought time till February 28 due to his official preoccupations,the police officer said.

There was to be a deposition in the same matter also before the Amravati Collector,Rahul Ranjan Mahiwal,but it couldnt take place as the latter was not available on Tuesday.
