With the Ministry of Environment and Forests MoEF nixing the Vedanta project at Niyamgiri hills, the Orissa government is now keeping its fingers crossed on the Rs 54,000 crore Posco steel project as the Meena Gupta committee set up by the ministry on Tuesday visited the site of the proposed captive port near Paradip that is to be used by the steel plant.
In July, the MoEF had formed the four-member panel headed by former secretary Meena Gupta to assess the implementation of the Forest Rights Act in the project area in Jagatsinghpur district. On August 5,the ministry issued an order banning acquisition of 1,253 hectares of forest land for the proposed plant after a subgroup of N C Saxena panel pointed to FRA violation.
Though the committee was earlier mandated to look into FRA implementation and rehabilitation measures, the state government is worried after the MoEF expanded the committees mandate on August 27,asking it to review compliance of Environmental Impact Assessment,Coastal Regulation Zone and other clearances by the central ministry and state government.
The committee last month had finished its assessment of the implementation of the FRA at the project site. The panel members, who visited the proposed port site Jatadhar river mouth on Tuesday, inspected the map of the port and interacted with the locals listening to their apprehensions about the port. The panel members inquired about its distance from the existing port in Paradip and possible CRZ violation if the project was allowed to come up.
