With Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressing concern over the future of the parliamentary system in the context of the stalemate in Parliament, the BJP on Sunday hit back at him questioning his contribution to efforts to end the logjam.
Seeking to turn the tables on the PM,the BJP said he should keep in mind that corruption in his Cabinet and the governments stubborn attitude towards the JPC probe constitute a threat to democracy.
The Prime Minister has spoken about the impasse in Parliament, but outside the country. He did not make any attempt to resolve the issue when he was in Delhi and never spoke about the issue in Parliament, BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said.
He said that the PM should keep in mind that it was his governments stubborn stand against setting up a JPC to probe the 2G scam that led to wash out of the Winter Session of Parliament. He said since it was the members of Singhs Council of Ministers, who have been facing corruption charges, the responsibility has to be collective.
Expressing concern over the future of parliamentary system in this context,Singh had on Saturday pointed out that the government had repeatedly tried to tell the Opposition that the existing mechanisms will serve the same purpose as a JPC.
Calling the UPA government the most corrupt, Hussain said it was due to the failure of the Manmohan Singh government that corruption took place,be it on allocation of 2G Spectrum licences or organising of the Commonwealth Games, and these were the reasons for which the Parliament stood disrupted.
The image of this government has taken a beating. We want to remind this government that the Opposition is united on the JPC demand and we will continue to demand it till the government agrees to it.
