PM calls for lowering energy intensity

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called for increasing efforts to reduce energy intensity of the economy and also increase domestic production of commercial energy as part of the countrys energy security strategy

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday called for increasing efforts to reduce energy intensity of the economy and also increase domestic production of commercial energy as part of the countrys energy security strategy.

Since we are largely dependent on fossil fuels, any improvement in the energy efficiency of our thermal power generation plants will help reduce energy intensity of our GDP. To this end,we must encourage increased use of super critical and ultra-super critical technologies for power generation, Singh said while delivering his inaugural address at a function here to mark the National Energy Conservation Day.

We are committed to increasing the proportion of clean energy in our total energy consumption,as spelt out in the National Action Plan on Climate Change, he added. The country is also looking at expediting domestic exploration activities to increase production of commercial energy in a bid to rationalise its dependence on imports. FE
