Palakkad in Kerala will become the countrys first fully electrified district on Tuesday. Union Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde will make a declaration to that effect at Ottapalam in the district. The complete electrification, however, will not mean power to all families as many from the weakest sections are yet to undertake the electrical wiring of their homes.

The Kerala State Electricity Board has ensured that power line reach all inhabited areas in the district. In remote places, where erecting distribution line was a costly affair, the board roped in ANERT to distribute solar lamps.

State Power Minister A K Balan said no other district has so far come forward to embrace the title of the fully electrified district. In metros, there could be slums which do not have electricity. Hence,we can make the claim to be the first fully electrified district.

Deputy Chief Engineer P Kumaran said the board has ensured power on demand in the entire district. The KSEB has no provision to meet the expenses of wiring and the requirements on the part of the consumers. In the case of weaker families, the board has suggested the local bodies and welfare departments to financially support them.
