Irom Sharmila Chanu, popularly known as the Iron Lady of Manipur, was arrested again on Wednesday evening, barely two days after her release on the occasion of Women's Day. The police have once again registered a case under Section 309 of the IPC for attempt to commit suicide". Sharmila had created history for having staged the longest-ever indefinite hunger strike, which she started on November 5,2000,three days after 10 people were killed at Malom,a locality near Imphal,in a shooting by the personnel of 8 Assam Rifles near a bus-stop after they were attacked by insurgents. She has been demanding repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act that provides immense powers to the security forces to even shoot a person on mere suspicion. Sharmila was picked up by a team from the Porompat police station in Imphal (East) district Wednesday evening when she resumed her hunger strike with members of the Sharmila Kanba Lup,supporting her cause with a relay hunger strike. She was produced before a magistrate before undergoing a medical check-up.
