After AIADMK’s overtures to the Congress ahead of the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls, party supremo Jayalalithaa is reportedly reaching out to Maratha strongman and NCP chief Sharad Pawar, who is being projected as prime ministerial candidate by his party. Jayalalithaa is learnt to have spoken at length to the NCP chief Pawar on Tuesday afternoon giving rise to speculation in the wake of Congress’ silence after Jayalalithaa’s offer.

While the occasion was Jayalalithaa’s birthday, sources said that the conversation was long enough to encompass political discussions.

The discussion between the two leaders comes close on the heels of SP general secretary Amar Singh’s meeting with Pawar to reach an electoral understanding with the NCP.

The NCP has been scouting for allies in order to corner the Congress after the CWC’s decision to refrain from any national level alliances, much to the chagrin of the NCP. The NCP has been posturing aggressively against the Congress and started cosying up to other regional parties at the national level. While Pawar has been in touch with the Left parties, the NCP is also on the lookout for more partners to expand its reach in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
