NRHM scam: Pradeep Shukla bail plea rejected

The Allahabad High Court on Friday rejected the bail application of IAS officer Pradeep Shukla, one of the main accused

The Allahabad High Court on Friday rejected the bail application of IAS officer Pradeep Shukla, one of the main accused in the multi-crore National Rural Health Mission NRHM scam.

Shukla is currently in jail in connection with the case registered by the CBI pertaining to upgradation of 40 district hospitals,in which he was accused of taking bribe of over Rs 1 crore for favouring a particular private company and giving work to an incompetent agency. The matter pertained to 2009,when he was the Principal Secretary Health.

Dismissing the plea,a single-judge Bench of Justice Shashi Kant Gupta said: Taking note of all facts and having regard to the nature and gravity of the offence, without expressing any opinion on merits, bail application is hereby rejected.

The CBI,through its counsel Anurag Khanna, had argued that enlarging Shukla on bail would lead to the other accused seeking the same. It was also argued by the CBI that the fair trial in the case was likely to be vitiated by the accused, who is an influential person. Further, the CBI had also argued that it had strong evidence against the accused in the case.

Shuklas counsel K N Tripathi had, apart from forwarding other arguments, also submitted that the accused was suffering from various ailments and needed proper treatment.
