In a surprise development,Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday said that some innocent persons were implicated in the NRHM cases, arising from the scandal which surfaced during the previous Mayawati government and are being investigated by the CBI.
The Chief Minister, speaking at a function organised at his official residence to mark the launching of a statewide free ambulance service, criticised the CBI for the slow progress of the probe in the murders of two CMOs and the death of one deputy CMO in Lucknow jail under suspicious circumstances.
Yadav added several persons were sent to jail in connection with the NRHM cases and the matter had badly affected the states image at the national level.
Incidentally, the state government has, since May,been sitting over a request of the CBI for permission to prosecute 20 doctors and two clerks in connection with the NRHM scam.
Also, the state government did not suspend Pradeep Shukla, former mission director of NRHM and principal secretary of family welfare, after he was arrested by the CBI on May 10. It was only on Tuesday the state government issued an order, stating that Shukla was deemed suspended after his arrest.
The BJP objected to the CMs statement, saying it could influence the ongoing probe. In a statement, party general secretary Vindhyavasini Kumar said the CM should explain the basis of his claim that some innocent persons had been implicated in the NRHM cases. If the government really believes so,it should place facts before the CBI,he said. He alleged like the BSP government, the SP government, was protecting the corrupt.
