‘Not averse to JPC probe, will do what Centre decides’

Tamil Nadu CM and DMK president M Karunanidhi said his party was not opposed to a JPC probe into the alleged 2G spectrum scam.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M Karunanidhi on Friday said his party was not opposed to a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the alleged 2G spectrum scam. Writing his regular Q&A column in the party organ Murasoli,Karunanidhi said DMK would follow the Centre’s decision in this regard. He said AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa had misinterpreted his earlier statement on the matter in an attempt to create a wedge between the alliance partners.

Maintaining that the DMK was not afraid of a JPC probe,Karunanidhi said he meant such an inquiry would be redundant as the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) was already looking into the matter.

While the PAC is headed by Opposition members — now by BJP leader Murali Manohar Joshi — a JPC is chaired by a member from the Treasury benches,Karunanidhi pointed out.

“I had only asked whether the Opposition had no faith in Joshi,” he said. The continued demand for the inquiry even after Raja’s resignation was an attempt to hold Parliament to ransom,Karunanidhi charged. “We had never opposed the constitution of a JPC,our stand is only that we will go with whatever decision that the Centre takes.” Jayalalithaa’s recent taunt on the issue was an attempt to create fissures in the alliance, alleged Karunanidhi, adding that both the Congress and his party had faith in each other.
