No bid to regulate media, says Tewari

Ruling out any outside regulation of the media,newly-appointed Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari

Ruling out any outside regulation of the media,newly-appointed Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari on Monday said his ministry would continue its focus on ensuring a level playing field for everyone and highlighting the policies of the Centre.

I think at the end of the day8230; this ministry or given the nature of the medium,we dont really have a regulatory remit. We have a remit which is essentially to see that the ground rules are properly laid out8230; Everybody has a level playing field to play on, said Tewari after taking charge.

And number two,to see that the policies and programmes of the UPA government get disseminated. So I think those are the essential two remits that we have, the minister said.

On the issue of digitisation of cable television,he said: I am in the process of getting feedback. Therefore, thats something which the ministry has already put in place. A new minister doesnt essentially mean that you unsettle the complete landscape. Let me get a feedback. Once we have a holistic perspective, well take a call on that.

He favoured a consensus on tackling the issue of paid news. I have myself contested elections twice and I am aware of the seriousness of the problem. But this is a kind of problem on which it is important to build a consensus, he said.
