The state that votes on caste voted for development this time, prompting Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to call the victory a continuity of the 2005 Assembly win. The election saw the JDU defeating two Bihar stalwartsLalu Prasad and Ram Vilas Paswan.

The NDA won 32 of the 40 seats, with the BJP winning 12 of the 14 seats it contested. The Congress won Sasaram and Kisanganj, while the RJD won four seats, with Umashankar Singh defeating JDU stalwart Prabhunath Singh from Maharajganj. Independents Digvijay Singh and Omprakash Yadav won from Banka and Siwan respectively.

Lalus victory from Saran Chhapra was the only saving grace for the RJD. Lalu defeated the BJPs Rajiv Pratap Rudy by over 52,500 votes. Raghuvansh Prasad Singh won from Vaishali. Eight-time MP Ramvilas Paswan lost in this landmark election.

Nitish Kumar called the NDA victory in Bihar a positive vote for development, government with justice and peace. People rejected Lalu and Paswan for their negative approaches. They always criticised us for nothing even though I looked forward to their help, he said. He also reiterated that the JDU stood with the NDA.

This election also rejected musclemen and their kin as wives of Suraj Bhan,Mohammed Sahabuddin and Pappu Yadav lost.

While Lalu Prasad kept the gates of his 10 Circular Road residence shut for the media till 4 p.m.,Paswan was more graceful in defeat as he said: Nitish did get immediate advantage but it is not all over. He will lose out to us in long run. Paswan lost to JDUs Ramsundar Das by over 37,000 votes.
